CompEx Refresher EX01 to EX04


Course Aim

The 2 day Refresher course intends to deliver competence based training and assessment in the selection, use, maintenance and inspection of electrical apparatus in potentially explosive atmospheres in accordance with the requirements of BS EN 60079 series relevant standards.

On completion of the assessments they are sent to the Awarding Body for marking, and if successful the candidates shall be issued with a competency certificate for the Refresher by JTL and EEMUA.

CompEx is the national training and assessment scheme for electro technical crafts personnel who work in potentially explosive atmospheres, such as on-and off-shore petrochemical plants, distilleries, petrol forecourt environments and flour mills.

CompEx is a national joint training initiative developed and implemented by the Engineering Equipment and Material Users Association (EEMUA) and JTL and is supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

JTL who is the National training agent for the Electrical contracting industry has been appointed to develop, operate and manage the training provision across the UK and has licensed and accredited a number of centres to deliver the training and assessment.



CompEx course (which includes assessments of installation and inspection works carried out within the training bodies test bay facilities) and held the certificate no longer than 5 years.  Delegates who are electrical and or instrument personnel can attend the 2 day ‘National Hazardous Area Refresher. 

Whereas the 5 day CompEx course requires training facilities to carry out the installation and inspection section of the assessment within the training bodies centres test bay facilities, the 2 day Refresher course comprises of all the same subject matter as the 5 day CompEx course but can be carried out at the clients site. The installation and inspection section of the assessments are simulated by the use of a portable pictorial test rig (one per candidate).

EX01R Preparation & Installation of EEx'd' 'e' and 'p' Systems.

EX02R Inspection & Maintenance of EEx'd' 'e' and 'p' Systems.

EX03R Preparation & Installation of EEx'i'a and 'i'b Systems.

EX04R Inspection & Maintenance of EEx'i'a and 'i'b Systems.



The course is 2 days in duration.

Day 1: 08:40 - 17:00 Course Theory Syllabus

Day 2: 08:40 - 17:00 Course Assessments based on CompEx Ex01-Ex04


Optimum Number:

Maximum number of 10 delegates per course.


Training Support:

Practical training and assessment, and the use of course hand-outs, EEMUA Toolbox Guide, Presentation and Pictorial test rigs.

A designated room for delivery of the course so that 10 pictogram boards (approx 80cm x 60cm) can be accommodated. 

Laptop, Projector and PowerPoint training presentation.
